Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your House

July 10, 2020

When it’s a scorching summer day in Marshalltown, nothing could be worse than figuring out your AC isn’t operating the way it should. The last thing you want to do is request AC service. But your AC is a pretty involved system, so it can be almost impossible to discern what’s triggering the problem by yourself.

That’s why B & G HVAC created this informational guide to help you figure out what might be taking place with your home comfort system. Here, you’ll discover a few everyday situtations that explain why your house is feeling too warm. And even though some of these are easy DIY activities, you could need to call in a pro for HVAC repair.

And if you need us, B & G HVAC is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Marshalltown.

1. Your Device Settings May Be Off

Every family sets their thermostat a little differently to fit their personal needs. Despite that, many households make the misstep of setting their system to “On” instead of “Auto.” With this setting, the fan in your HVAC system will continue to push out air even when you’ve achieved your preferred temperature.

This can come off like your ducts are blowing out warmish air, when really it’s simply using the fan more frequently than needed. Trying changing this setting and determine if things are different.

2. Your System Needs Some Cleaning

There are two central spaces to investigate for dirt or dust accrual when your home comfort system doesn’t seem to be performing correctly.

First off, take a look at your system’s filter. If you don’t change your filter routinely, buildup can make it more challenging for air to flow through and cool your house. If your filter is obviously dirty or dusty, it’s more than likely time for a substitute. (And in general, you should change it about once every three months at the very least.)

If your filter appears fine, move to your outside unit. Find out if there’s a reasonable amount of room around your air conditioner and clear away plants or litter close by. This element of your cooling system lets off the heat from inside your space. If the coils outside are congested, you won’t be feeling cool indoors.

We suggest setting professional air conditioner maintenance every year to keep your unit working properly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the substance that conditions the air in your space. It cycles between your indoor and outdoor units to soak up and discharge heat, to help your space get cool. If there is a leak somewhere, you won’t be cool again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.

Indications of a refrigerant leak include a drop in treated air, higher monthly expenses, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises coming from your system.

If you think refrigerant might be leaking, call B & G HVAC for AC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be hazardous to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Have to Be Replaced

Your cooling system is made up of a few key pieces. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one part is not working, your home comfort will suffer.

Our B & G HVAC experts are certified and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you find and repair any trouble.

5. Your System Needs to Be Replaced

If your air conditioner is upward of 10 years old, it is probably a good time to consider new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it simply won’t work as well as it did when it was new. And it could be making your place too warm.

If your AC is more current but still isn’t keeping you cool, it could be undersized for your space. Air conditioners are not all the same size. An AC that’s not powerful enough absolutely can’t cool a home the way a properly sized system can.
